ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio volleyball team (12-17, 7-9 MAC) concluded the 2018 regular season with a 3-0 (26-24, 30-28, 25-21) loss to Mid-American Conference East Division archrival Miami (21-7, 13-3 MAC) tonight at the Convocation Center.
The Bobcats honored the four members of their 2018 senior class -- outside hitter Jaime Kosiorek (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), right side hitter Katie Nelson (Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada), right side hitter Stephanie Olman (Maumee, Ohio) and outside hitter Carley Remmers (Filley, Neb.) -- prior to the match.
Olman paced Ohio with 11 kills, hitting .258 for the match. She also contributed two solo blocks. Olman has now posted double-digit kills in four of the last six matches. Kosiorek finished with nine kills. Junior outside hitter Lizzie Stephens (Dallas, Texas) just missed out on a double-double, tallying nine kills and 15 digs to go along with two service aces. Sophomore middle blocker Tia Jimerson (Sugar Hill, Ga.) hit .429 with eight kills and added two total blocks (one solo, one assisted). Sophomore setter Vera Giacomazzi (San Vendemiano, Italy) achieved a double-double with a match-high 40 assists to go along with 11 digs. Sophomore libero/defensive specialist Macy Reihing (Lexington, Ky.) piled up a team-high 19 digs.
Ohio suffered two tough losses in the first two sets, which both required extra points to decide a winner. The Bobcats fell behind 22-16 in the third set, but a block by Jimerson, a service ace by junior libero/defensive specialist Meredith Howe (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and a kill by Jimerson made it a three-point set, but a kill by Miami junior middle hitter Margarent Payne ended the match.
Freshman outside hitter/right side hitter Sophie Riemersma hit the RedHawks with 16 kills and hit .400. She also added two service aces and three assisted blocks. Payne hit .400 with 10 kills and led the match with six assisted blocks. Senior outside hitter/right side hitter Stela Kukoc led the match with five service aces. Sophomore setter Morgan Seaman led Miami with 26 assists while freshman setter Louise Comerford tallied 16 assists and two service aces. Sophomore libero Abigail Huser led the match with 22 digs while freshman outside hitter Gaby Harper totaled 15.
Up next for Ohio is the 2018 MAC Championship, which will take place next week (Nov. 15-18) at Miami's Millett Hall in Oxford, Ohio. The Bobcats, who qualified for the conference tournament for the 17th year in a row, will be the No. 7 seed and face No. 6-seeded Northern Illinois (11-20, 9-7 MAC) in the 2018 MAC Championship First Round on Thursday (Nov. 15) at 7 p.m. The Bobcats and the Huskies faced off on Oct. 20 at the Convo in the lone regular season meeting between the two squads, with Northern Illinois edging Ohio, 3-2 (25-23, 25-27, 17-25, 32-30, 15-7). The winner of Thursday's match will face No. 3-seeded Ball State (21-8, 12-4 MAC) in the Second Round on Friday (Nov. 16) at 7 p.m. The winner of that match earns the right to face No. 2-seeded Miami on Saturday (Nov. 17) at 7 p.m. The 2018 MAC Championship Final will be held on Sunday (Nov. 18) at 4:30 p.m. Bowling Green (19-10, 13-3 MAC) is the tournament's No. 1 seed. All 2018 MAC Championship matches will be streamed live on ESPN+, with Randy Hollowell and Lisa Dankovich on the call. Ohio is 35-8 (.814) all-time in 17 previous MAC Championship appearances. The Bobcats have won the league tournament crown nine times, with the last coming in 2015. Ohio will be facing Northern Illinois in the conference tournament for the ninth time, with the Bobcats holding a 5-3 edge over the Huskies in the all-time postseason series. The two teams last met in the MAC Championship on Nov. 19, 2016, with Northern Illinois picking up a 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-19) victory in the semifinals.
